With the proper wine cellar equipment any nook or unused space in your house can be transformed. All you need is a dark enclosed area, secure wine racks, and temperature and humidity controls.

The best place to begin is in your basement. It is usually the coolest and darkest area. If you do not have a basement you can look for an unused closet or small room. Wherever you decide, you should survey the space to see what you will need. If you decide to use the first of second floor of your house be sure that the flooring can support the additional weight of a wine cellar.

One consideration to keep in mind is that a wine cellar can increase the value of your home.

Using a thermometer and humidity gage, track the readings for a period of time. You want to see what fluctuations you will have to deal with. Hopefully you can find a location that is relatively cool, dark and stable.

Armed with that information you can begin to research the exact cooling and humidity system you will need. Wine cellar coolers will keep your wine cellar temperature at a desired temperature. A consistent 55 F (12 C) will allow your wine to age slowly and develop a wonderful complexity. A wine cellar humidifier keeps the area between 50 - 70 %.

These wine cellar cooling units can range in cost from approximately $300 to $1500 US depending on the size of the room. Some of the better-known manufactures of wine cellar cooling systems are Breezaire and Koolspace ChillR.

Once you have the area and the cooling system, you will need to decide on the type of racks you will use. There are many variations and combinations available. Wine cellar racks can be assembled and installed by any do-it yourselfer. Wine should be stored on its side in a way that allows you to remove a bottle without disturbing any others.

If you decide to turn an area of your basement into a wine cellar, be sure to consider the addition of a wine cellar door. This will allow you to keep the temperature and humidity constant.

No extra space in your house

If you have no suitable space in your house to transform into a wine cellar, you can purchase a wine cellar cooler unit. These free standing wine cellar units come in a multitude of styles and sizes. Some of the more common manufacturers are Transtherm, Estate, LeCache and Vinotheque. These offer the functionality of a wine cellar with the portability of a refrigerator.
