There are several different types of wine refrigerators available for both storing and cooling wine. Unlike a wine cellar, these units are designed to chill wine to the optimum serving temperature. And a wine refrigerator is not equipped with humidity controls, like a wine cellar.
Some manufactured wine cellars have temperature zones, which allow different wines to be stored at the optimum serving temperature. These units offer the best of both worlds.
Which wine refrigerator is right for you?
Wine coolers come in a variety of sizes. There are small tabletop wine cooling units that are utilized to rapidly chill a single bottle of wine. There are also under cabinet wine coolers or counter top models that will chill 2 to 8 bottles. For the host who enjoys entertaining crowds these are ideal.
There are also large wine refrigerators that are used to store many bottles of wine, a common choice for restaurants or hotels. A built in wine refrigerator is also an option. Many of these will offer a dual temperature wine cooler in order to allow you to chill both red and white wines in the same unit.
Serving temperatures
Temperature is vitally important to the overall experience of a wine.
Red wines would be served between 13 to 19 C (55 to 66 F), and the more full bodied red wines can be served at the upper end of the range.
White and Rose can be served between 8 to 14 C (46 to 57 F) depending on individual preference. Sparkling wines are the coolest and should be served between 6 to 8 C (43- 47 F).
Most fridges are set between 1 to 3 degrees C (35 to 38 F), which is much colder than any of the recommended serving temperatures. They're also a gathering place for a multitude of odors, which is not where you want your wine to sit as these can be absorbed through the cork.
The big advantage
A wine cooler provides the adequate temperature at a consistent rate for your desired wine. Maintaining this consistency is vital. If you wine is currently sitting in a wine rack somewhere in your kitchen, you might want to consider purchasing a wine cooler. The temperature in your kitchen could easily fluctuate by 10 degrees in a single day.
Taking care of all these little details will help create a positive experience for you and your guests by creating a reputation for fine wines at your table and in your household for many years to come.
